A little about me,
I have been a Taoist (also spelled Daoist) for nearly 28 years, and the past 17 years of my life I have dedicated to becoming what I am now, an ordained Taoist priest. I have studied the I-Ching (Book of Changes) in depth, and I am well versed in using this method of divination in its numerous forms, and interpreting the meaning of the hexagrams beyond the surface “Yes” and “No” answers that it can provide for the layperson. I am also versed in Chinese Astrology. I have also been trained in advising others in spiritual matters, and dealing with the situations when it is called for. I look forward to serving you and helping you find the answers you seek!
I-Ching
The I-Ching (Book of Changes), was first discovered over 4000 years ago by the Chinese king Wen, then later rearranged in honor of Fu Xi, in the more familiar form we see today. According to the ‘legend’ behind the I-Ching, the sets of 3 lines that make up the upper and lower halves of each symbol,
known as trigrams, and in combination for readings, hexagrams, were first seen on the shell of a turtle, by King Wen. This divine inspiration, in seeing the original 8 trigrams, which hold their own meaning as the bagua (pa-kua, as it is also known)carried through for a myriad of other uses within Chinese cosmology, geomancy, and even medicine and martial arts, aside from the use in a divination tool. Needless to say, this system has had a profound effect on not only the philosophy and religion of Taoism and Buddhism, but on Chinese culture as a whole. Millennia later, the author Richard Wilhelm made the first translation into a Western language (German), and later, the great mind of Carl Jung, added to this by not only bringing the translation into English and French, but also adding to it his insight to the seemingly cryptic messages of the passages that accompany the different hexagrams.
The I-Ching symbols themselves consist of 6 lines total for each symbol, “built” from the bottom up with each cast of the coins or yarrow stalks (the two primary traditional methods), in addition to having a corresponding character in the language from which it sprung. The lines are either a single, solid line, or a ‘broken’ line, with the former representing the Yang force, and the broken line representing the Yin. These lines can be in one of four states, strong Yang, Yang transitioning to Yin, strong Yin, and finally, Yin transitioning to Yang. This reflects the cycle of Yin and Yang that Taoism itself is founded upon, all things in balance, and flowing with Change, hence the literal translation of the name of the book, ‘The Book of Change’. From this set of lines, and their stable, or transitory lines, one can get a clearer picture of what the state of things are now, and the course things will take if no action is taken to change the course of things that are indicated by the symbol (or symbols, as the lines of the character that are in flux, will form another hexagram if translated to the next level in turn). In short, a reading may be as simple as one hexagram being generated, or as involved as having nearly a dozen, which can reinforce and also show the other extreme of the situation, all in one reading.
I hope that this brief history and explanation of how the I-Ching works, was helpful to you, and I look forward to doing your reading soon!
